Can You Get Into Shape Practicing Yoga? Can that be possible? I thought that yoga was a bunch of fruits and nuts people rolling around on a mat. I could not have been further from the truth!
The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root 'yuj' meaning 'to unite' which means that it helps in uniting the mind and the body. But, what is yoga? Yoga also describes the integration of mind and body to create a greater connection with one's own pure, essential nature..
It is the exercise of the body and the spirit and will definitely help you to get in shape. Yoga dates back to the Upanishads, written during 1000-5000 BC. Bhakti yoga, Hatha yoga, Bikram yoga, Karma yoga, Kundalini yoga, Mantra yoga, Svaroopa yoga and Ananda yoga are some of the types of yoga practices.
Another way to get into shape with yoga is by practicing Power Yoga. It is better known as Ashtanga yoga. Ashtanga yoga is is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009).
This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
Power Yoga has also evolved into the modern Hot Vinyasa class, which uses the asanas from traditional Ashtanga and many other poses and strings them together linked by the famous "downward dog".
It started gaining popularity during the late 90’s and as the name suggests, it is fast paced and involves quite a bit of effort. It differs from other forms of yoga as it has an emphasis on fitness and it gives more importance to strength and flexibility of the body.
Yes, it can be followed by people at most fitness levels... here are a few tips for power yoga or a vinyasa class in your neighborhood:- practice on an empty stomach- drink plenty of water- wear loose, comfortable clothing- try to evacuated your bowels before yoga- early morning is the optimal time for yoga, but some people prefer the evening, because they are not as stiff. Either way, you are staring your new Get Fit Yoga Schedule!
The following are some of the benefits of yoga:
Increases the flexibility of the body. It activates the different joints of the body, including the ones that cannot be triggered with regular exercises.
Acts as a ligament, connecting bones or cartilages or supporting muscles or organs. It also helps exercise the various joints and tendons of the body.
Massages all the internal glands and organs of the body including those that hardly get externally moved during our entire span of life.
Can be a tool for detoxification of the body, by flushing out harmful toxins from every organ and part of the body.
Helps in toning the various muscles of the body. Muscles which have been drooping and fragile are moved repeatedly and helps in the weight loss process.
Regular practice of yoga helps in mood improvement and lessening of nervousness and tension.
Yoga encourages living happily by reducing depression.
Nourishes the skin and makes it glow and look younger and healthier.
Reduces the chances of osteoporosis since it helps keep calcium in the bones by lowering the levels of adrenal-cortex hormone that is active in carbohydrate and protein metabolism.
Benefits the cardiovascular system. It helps in circulating the blood and oxygen throughout our body.
Regular practice of yoga leads to improved sleep.
Increases the energy level in your body and helps fight fatigue.
Becomes a stepping stone for sedentary individuals to start an exercise program in order to get fit and lose weight.
Get Into Shape With Yoga
I adopted my own yoga practice after years of intense workouts. Shoulder injuries and horribly tight muscles led me to that yoga room at our local gym about eight years ago.
Needless to say, I am hooked! As a Paleo lifestyle fan, yoga is a great way to utilize a moderate exercise day that can be alternated with more intense exercise days. The slow burn offered keeps cortisol levels in check and releases a boatload of stress!
Try it dahling, you won't be sorry.
As you can see, the practice of yoga helps to relax the mind and body and improving strength through various postures and breathing exercises. The benefits of yoga surpass the benefit of many other exercise and therefore it is a great idea to get into shape with yoga.
